30+ Apples
Apples were first cultivated in the Kazakh mountains, 4,000 years ago. They spread along the Silk Road and around the world and inspired many myths and stories.
Eating a forbidden apple was responsible for 'The Fall' in Christianity. The apple of discord sparked a vanity-fuelled dispute between the Greek goddesses which led to the Trojan War. Snow White's stepmother tried to kill her with a poisoned apple.
On the bright side, apples are very high in potassium and fibre. They contain vitamins C, K, B2, B6, copper and manganese. Their phytonutrients are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and support the digestive, cardiovascular and immune systems as well as healthy blood sugar levels. The peel is high in rutin which supports vascular health.
Apples are eaten as a snack. They are cooked in pies, crumbles, puddings and cakes. They are used in salads such as Waldorf Salad. They are pressed and made into apple juice and fermented and made into cider or brandy.
